School of Life SciencesHigher education, to the Department of Biology (1923), to the present name (1998). In 1952, the Department of Biology of Fu Jen Catholic University was integrated into the Department. Currently, the College consists of the Department of Cell Biology, the Department of Ecology, the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology and the Department of Genetics. It also includes the Institute of Cell Biology, the Institute of Ecology and the Institute of Biology and Medical Sciences. In its history of more than a century, the College of Life Sciences of BNU produced numerous nation’s leading biologists including: Yi Bingzhi(Chih Ping), Yu Dejun(Yu Te-Toun), Wang Kunren (Wang Kun-Ren), Liu Ruiyu , Wang Wencai, Sun Ruyong, Zheng Guangmei, Wang Xiaodong. They have helped to establish the modern biology education and research foundation of the country. This leading position of the college in high education and research of biology has been maintained and strengthened. In our faculty, 83% held Ph. D degree in biology relevant disciplines. Professors Zheng Guangmei and Sun Ruyiong have been national recognized scholars. Research funding has been consistently increased to about 93 million RMB in the past five years. Many of the professors are in charging of numerous national key research programs. Between 2002 and 2007, the faculty of the college had published more than six hundred research articles in various national and international academic journals. More than 900 undergraduate (~450) and graduate students (~320 MS and ~150 Ph.D students) in the College of Life Sciences enjoy our comprehensive teaching and research programs the college offered. The numerous laboratories well equipped with various instruments, and a specialized library exposed the students to the modern technology in biology, and the up-to-date biology related information. The college and the faculty will proactively pursuing opportunities and making adjustments of their courses and research to effectively meet the challenge of the rapid development in biology to ensure the highest quality of our students and our research projects.
